Powers and Abilities:
- Force Field Generation and Manipulation Tyler has the power to create force fields. He does this through telekinetic manipulation of the motion and density of the world around him. This should not be confused with gravity manipulation. Through mental concentration he can cause a layer of substance, usually air, to thicken and become solid. This layer can be either in the shape of a circular bubble, or a flat rectangle. He can place them anywhere he desires, within reason. The basic applications of his powers are outlined below. They can be classed into 3 divisions. Field creation, field projection, and field manipulation.
- Force fields for protection. Ty can create walls wherever he desires, within reason. Likewise he can create bubbles anywhere as well. He can command the field to not let anything pass through it, thus protecting whatever is inside/behind it.
- Force field osmosis. Ty can control, with an effort, what is allowed to pass through his fields. This means he can create a field that lets in oxygen, but keeps water out – handy if one needs to visit the ocean floor. Likewise he can make sure bullets don’t pass through the front of the bubble, whilst letting his team mates escape through the back.
- Force field flight. Ty can create a field around an object, people, or himself. He can then direct the field to lift into the air, lifting the encapsulated object with it. This allows Ty to telekinetically throw objects and people around, and allows him to fly.
- Platform creation. Ty can create his flat fields at any angle he wishes, meaning whilst he can create walls very effective at keeping things out, he can also create floors. With these platforms, Ty can create a force field staircase, along with other applications.
- Full body fields. Ty can create a field around his body that is not bubble or rectangular in shape. It is instead a thin layer of dense air just above his skin’s surface. Generally he activates it when he gets in a fight as it draws relatively little energy. If he does not actively focus on it, it simply acts as a half an inch thick layer of rubber foam between his body and the world. Meaning blows are softened but stabbing or gunshots are not effected. If he concentrates on it however he can make it impenetrable to anything but oxygen. If he chooses to expand the body field it becomes a bubble field.
- Partial body fields. When Ty creates a field around his body it’s not always for protection. Another ability his powers grant him is being able to create partial full body fields. For instance he can create a small field just above the skin of his fist, meaning when he punches he can strike with extra force. Likewise he can put a field around his feet to kick harder, or around his head so he can head butt without having the head spinning aftereffects.
- Force field projection. Ty can condense his fields down into small shapes such as balls the size of bullets or tennis balls. He can then mentally send them flying towards a target with great speed, them being so light and not containing anything other than air.
- Detonation. With great concentration Ty can create a field inside an object. He can then focus on expanding that field. This results in the field causing the object it is inside to explode outwards.
Weaknesses Tyler’s abilities are somewhat complicated by the fact that they are very hard to see. His force fields are completely clear, however due to the density changes, images seen through them are slightly distorted. To create and manipulate his fields, Ty finds he has to use some part of his body to direct them. For instance, if he wanted to make a wall between himself and a pile of falling rocks, he’d have to thrust his hands out in front of him and focus on creating the wall. If his hands were to be immobilized, the strength and finesse of his fields would greatly decrease. That said, he can also create fields with his other body parts ie his feet, and if greatly pressed, he can create fields away from his body with his mind alone through extreme concentration. General rule of thumb though, if his hands are out of action, Tyler is limited to just being able to create a bubble around himself, expanding to a maximum radius of 10 meters.
His powers are fueled by mental concentration and his own bodies strength. This means that with extended use not only does his mind become very fatigued resulting in a large migraine, but his body also becomes drained, like he has run a marathon. However this is related to what exactly he has been doing with his powers. The creation and maintaining of fields is what tires his mind, but it is the movement, expansion, and force put into the effort of creating motion that tires his limbs. Eg, to create a bubble around his body would tire his mind if he wanted to keep it just above his skin for a long time. If however he wanted to expand the bubble to encompass a bus load of kids, it would be his arm muscles that would push the boarders of the bubble away, and then those same muscles that would hold the bubble barriers at that distance. This is why to create a field anywhere but around his immediate person when restrained is extremely difficult for Tyler and results in a severe head ache and nose bleed.
The creation of force fields is more tiring than keeping them up. Likewise the movement or expansion of a field is more tiring than keeping the field at the place it has been moved to. Hence, the time limits on Tyler’s force fields are highly variable. If he is in a situation where he needs to create a lot of fields, use them to lift or explode objects at a distance away from himself, he will run out of energy after about 30 minutes. If however he only needs to keep the body field up around himself he can do so for 7 hours. His shields will disappear the moment he stops concentrating on them. This means if he is distracted eg been shot in the leg, then his shields will immediately fail. Likewise if he is unconscious or very weak from extended use, his fields will fail.
The further away from his body a field becomes, the harder it is for Tyler to actively maintain it. His absolute maximum range of expansion for a bubble is 200m in diameter. However he could only keep it at that size for a few minutes before the physical strain became too much and it collapsed inwards. He can generally only create fields in his line of sight. To make one where he can’t see may lead to him accidentally exploding someone. The furthest distance away from himself where he can create a field is 100m. However to create a field 100m away would be very mentally draining. This is why Ty tends to only create fields close to himself. To expand a bubble field 100m away would be very straining for Tyler. It could probably only reach 50m in diameter before it failed.
- Force fields for protection. To simply make a field impenetrable to everything is very easy for Ty as it requires less mental concentration. However his fields do shatter if the force pressed upon them is greater than the density of the field. Eg a 3 inch thick wall field would be enough to stop a hail of bullets. However if it were struck by a train it would smash back into gaseous form. To make the shield impenetrable to the speeding train would be very difficult for Ty and he’d probably have to stand right behind it to get the needed level of control. He has 2 options, he can increase the density of the 3 inch barrier, however this becomes very taxing physically and mentally once he reaches the threshold of very high density, for it requires a great deal of physical strength for Ty to compress the very dense air any further. The easier option is to increase the thickness of the wall, maybe to 3 feet thick, whilst also slightly increasing the density
- Force field osmosis. This is not a physically taxing ability, nor is it that taxing on his mental reserves. It does require however an extreme amount of concentration. If Ty is distracted for even a moment the bubble field he had up protecting himself and his friends from the pressures of the ocean water extending for 50 odd meters above him could switch from letting in only oxygen, to letting in everything. When Ty is concentrating on allowing varying degrees of osmosis in a field, and is then distracted, the field will default to letting in pretty much anything. If he was letting in the oxygen he would be doing so by creating small pores in the field. When his concentration failed, these pores would have structurally weakened his field, and it would allow everything of a great density than itself to pass through, ie, the ocean.
- Force field flight. As explained earlier, Ty experiences more fatigue when he manipulates fields away from his body. This is why, to use his body field to fly is not very taxing to the man physically or mentally. He can easily fly for 3 hours before becoming to tired to keep the shield up. If however he needed to create a field around a car, then throw that 50m down the road at someone, that would be both physically and mentally straining. He could only pull the car move about 6 times in rapid succession before he would need to give his body a chance to recover from the physical stress involved in giving motion to such a large mass. His mind however would not be as fatigued and could continue to create fields locally around him. If Ty needs to lift a number of people to fly he generally does this by expanding his body field and lifting them all with himself instead of creating individual fields for all of them. However he prefers to simply create a large platform; see below.
- Platform creation. Platforms experience the same limitations as walls do as explained in the Force field for protection section. However, aside from creating stair cases and other angled fields such as a slide down off a roof top to the street below, Ty also uses these fields to allow people to fly with him. When he flies in a body field by himself he generally flies around like Superman would. If he decides to travel on a platform however, he has to travel more slowly or else the wind would blow him off. Ty can create a platform of maximum 200x200m, but as with his maximum sized bubble, this quickly shrinks back down to smaller proportions after a few minutes. When Ty has to allow several people to travel with him, he generally creates a platform large enough for them all to stand on, then travels by telekinetically moving the platform around. He can only use this method of travel for about 2 hours with 3 people on board. The more people or things he has to take up with him, the less time he can keep the field going.
- Full body fields. These can last a maximum of 7 hours as a cushioning layer. If Ty turns them into a field impenetrable to everything but oxygen they last only 5 hours. When Ty uses these fields to fly, he makes it so they are in the cushion form and hence reduce the impact of the wind on him. This means he can travel at great speeds before becoming affected by wind chill and the drag force of air as the field makes him more aerodynamic. Ty can make these fields very dense, however not as dense as he could a wall field as explained earlier. This is because he cannot use his own body strength to push the air together into a more compact form, he can only use his mind to do that. That said, when Ty expands the field into bubble form it is much easier to do so than with a bubble away from his own body. This is because he can just fling his arms out to the side and give the field great momentum.
- Partial body fields. These partial shields, whilst small, are not difficult to make, but are rather hard to maintain. Ty’s fields naturally want to become either rectangular, circular, or envelop his whole body. To create the field over specific parts of his body is very easy and requires little effort. To keep them there on the other hand, and making sure they don’t become a bubble, square, or full body field is another matter. This is why when Ty uses these fields he generally lets them fade once their job is done. Eg, he will create a field over his fists whilst he is boxing with one person, but he will let them fade as he waits for his next opponent to step up a few moments later. It’s for this reason that the density of the partial body fields is quite low, as Tyler doesn’t have the time to strengthen them that much before they fade out of his control. Hence, if he knows he’ll need protection over his hands for a long time, Ty just enables the full body field as it is much more stable.
- Force field projection. These fields are generally circular in shape as it makes propelling them through the air easier. They are not very hard to move physically, nor are they that hard to create. Ty can simply uses his hands to help him compress air down to form the projectiles. It’s keeping the fields highly compressed and not allowing the drag forces in the atmosphere to rip them apart that is what taxes Tyler with this ability. This means using projections is most highly effective in short range. If Tyler needs to send them further, he’ll either send just one or two projectiles so his concentration is less split, or he’ll decrease the speed of them so there is less forces trying to break them apart. Generally his volley of projectiles will fade into simply a gust of air at around 60m. His single projectiles will fade at around 90m. Like his partial body fields, these projectiles do not last long once they leave the zone near his body where he can easily help keep them compressed. Generally Ty shoots them, and once they reach the target or exceed his range, he lets them fade.
- Detonation. These fields have the same limitations as bubble fields created at distance to Tyler have. However they also have additional faults. Ty’s powers work by him creating a layer of substance at a different density to the substance around it, then manipulating the layer he has created. In air this is a fairly simple procedure. In a solid object on the other hand, it is infinitely more complex. To create the layer in custard is fairly easy as the liquid is not very dense and quite fluid. To create the layer in soil is a fair bit harder, but the substrate is made up of particles interspaced by air pockets where the particles don’t completely meet up, meaning there is some room for movement. To create a layer in solid steel is a little bit harder than it is to create the layer in soil. The particles are already there to be condensed so Ty doesn’t have as much work to do. It’s the expansion of the field that causes all the trouble. In custard it’s like trying to breathe through your towel, a little bit harder than usual, but nothing to worry about. In soil, it requires quite a bit of physical strength on Tyler’s behalf, but once the material starts to move it does so quite rapidly and effectively, like trying to turn on a rusty tap. To expand the field in a solid steel door such as one in a bank vault, Tyler finds it almost impossible to do. Steel is not a substance that likes to move, especially when it’s a foot thick. Generally it starts to bend outwards as Tyler puts on the pressure. It takes him about 2 minutes, but after an exceptional amount of effort the door will explode outwards. This sort of move generally leaves Tyler extremely physically exhausted. He usually gains a nose bleed and has been known to pass out the first few times he tried it. These days, he merely needs to sit down for a moment to regain his feet. He still gets the nose bleeds however. Mentally, this move is not that tiring as he did not need to create a field that far from himself, nor expand it a long way for a long time. This means after a few minutes of rest he can start to create fields close by himself again.
I am aware that the powers I have listed have exceeded the limitations explained in the application template. However as you suggested Ty should be of equal level to Magneto I put all these in here. Should you decide Ty is overpowered simply choose which power facets should go and I will happily remove them. Just thought it would be a good plan to lay these all out here so you guys could see all the options I think Ty’s powers can potentially grant him.
Appearance:
Tyler has thick brown hair that has grown to a length that can almost be called shaggy. It tends to clump together in locks and point to the right side of his head thanks to him constantly flicking it off in that direction. He does however make an effort to keep it short in the back so that it doesn’t itch his neck. His eyes are a hazel brown that’s several shades lighter than his hair. Within the iris Ty has a thin ring of yellow just beside his pupil that one would not notice unless having a staring contest with him.
Drake has a tall (5’8”), lean build characteristic of a man of his age. He is not built like a footballer, however due to constantly training physically to better control his powers, Ty is made of pretty much pure muscle. His face has an angular quality to it, his chin and nose especially. Were his ears pointed some could risk calling him elf-like, taking into consideration his fair pale white complexion. However that would quickly be put to rest when people see Ty without his shirt. The man is covered in numerous scars, indeed there is even a thin white line running through Drake’s right eyebrow. Most of these were accumulated whilst Ty was Parkouring around New York during his days as a vigilante hero. However some including the crisscross scars on his back came from the time when he was kidnapped by an anti-mutant group.
Drake tends to wear stylish clothes. Generally you can find him in a collared shirt and dress pants with $200 plus shoes. Armani designs are a particular favorite. However when it comes time for Ty to step up into his new found position as Brotherhood leader he tends to don his bad guy suit. A faded navy blue jacket that can sometimes pass as grey covers a collared black T-shirt. Grey pants and black leather business shoes complete the outfit.
Personality:To understand why Drake does the things he does you must first understand that the man is driven namely by one thing. Loyalty. It was his loyalty to the girl that sat next to him in math that he had feelings for that drove him to use his powers against the bully Brent. It was loyalty to those that could not defend themselves that drove him to take up the mantle of vigilante hero. And then it was loyalty to defend his own kind against the human threat that saw him join the Brotherhood ranks. Drake is not a villain, he does not seek out situations in which he can assault humans and gain joy from their suffering. He simply follows the course of action he believes is right. However he does have deep seated feelings of hatred for humans after the kidnapping so when the opportunity presents itself to him for a little pay back, he is not a big enough man to walk away.
Tyler used to be a very happy go lucky guy. Always cracking jokes and the life of the party. However he had to reign in his jovial tendencies when he took up the hero mantle. With so many eyes watching his every move as one of the poster boys for mutant tolerance, it wouldn’t do to be found making a joke that out of context could be considered anti-human in nature. After the kidnapping incident Tyler’s sense of humor was almost gone. His persona took on a very serious façade. He became cold, hard, calculating. Blessed with a strong intellect thanks to his expensive education, combined with his English accent that naturally makes him sound smarter and more smug than he actually is, Drake is quite the strategist when it comes to the Brotherhoods war. Unlike many of the other mutants he works with, Drake is quite used to taking on large foes by himself thanks to his vigilante days. This means when it comes to challenging situations Ty always keeps his cool, generally because he’s faced worse things before. His previous experience and disciplined use and understanding of the inner workings of his powers mean that he is often turned to to take the lead in situations, despite his young age.
Drake abandoned the name Tyler almost entirely when he escaped from his captors, taking on his codename Drake instead. Only a select few call him Tyler, and if you’re not one of those few and call him that, it’s likely his fist will meet your face. Drake is devoted to his cause, he knows that the Brotherhoods chance of success increases with the strength of it’s members, so Drake is training harder than ever to keep his body in peak physical condition. He discovered that through learning to control his body movements he could better focus the energy of his force fields and increase their potency. Hence if you wish to find Drake and he is not busy doing Brotherhood business, it is likely he would be at the gym or power training.
In summery, Drake is a guy that comes off as very cold, serious, and intense. If you gain access to his inner circle of trust then you may see him crack the occasional smile and joke. However most just see a man who is smart, calculating, brutal when he wants to be, and able to keep his cool in almost all situations.
History:Tyler Kent was born to Harry and Jenny Kent on a small farm just north of Knox City, Missouri, America. However his mother got a job in London England when Tyler was 6 months old. The family moved there and Ty grew up to develop his characteristic British accent whilst he hoped between private schools as Jenny’s job took her across the island country. It was when he turned 10 that the boy’s powers first made themselves known.
Tyler had gotten into a fight at school. A kid almost twice his size had decided to pick on the girl that sat next to Ty in Math class. Naturally, doing the honorable thing, Tyler had turned around and tackled the jerk. A fist fight on the handball court ensued. Tyler didn’t stand a chance, the kid was easily pummeling him and Ty’s punches to the boy’s face did nothing but make his hand hurt. To this day Tyler doesn’t know what chain of thought lead to his next action, but somehow the adrenaline of the fight and the desire to protect those he was loyal to drove him to throw a punch on a whole new level. He threw a right hook just as a partial field developed over that fist. The resulting force of the blow was enough to knock the kid off Tyler, sending him flying several feet back and knocking him out cold. Tyler for his part fainted, the strain of manipulating matter taking it’s toll.
For the next 6 months Tyler was at that school he was the local hero. Little Ty, the kid that was small even among others his age, had decked Brent, the kid who was the size of a house. And the girl Ty saved, there was a whirlwind romance of hand holding and ice creams, but it was not to last.
It wasn’t until Tyler was 12 that his powers had another appearance. His family had just moved back to London and the boy was helping his mother do the grocery shopping. Unfortunately the Coco pops he desperately wanted to sneak into the trolley whilst Jenny was preoccupied inspecting cheese were on the top shelf and no matter how hard he tried to reach them, it was just out of his reach. Frustration mounting and window of opportunity closing, the young mutant did what any annoyed child would do to the inanimate object that taunts him so. He got up on tippy toes and tried one last time. Thinking back, Tyler likens what happened next to that scene in star wars when Luke uses the force to get his light saber and cut himself down from the roof of the ice cave. Tyler had wanted that Coco pops so badly that he actually used his powers to levitate and pull the box down into his hand. He barely had time to feel his moment of triumph before he fainted again from exhaustion. On the bright side though, Jenny bought him the Coco pops just to help him feel better after the incident.
For the next year Tyler practiced with his powers, mostly just trying to lift stuff from the floor of his room up onto his loft bed. That way when he had success and fainted it just looked like he was napping. When Tyler turned 15 his body hit puberty. The massive growth spurt affected more than just his height. Tyler’s powers also dramatically increased. Over the last few years he’d become proficient enough to lift several objects up to his bed at a time. Yet by the time he turned 16 he could lift his entire bed with ease. No longer did he faint after moving a pencil. Putting 2 and 2 together, Ty realized that it was through his increase in physical strength that he could control his powers better. So the young man took up boxing as he discovered the other facets of his powers besides telekinesis.
When Tyler turned 17 his family moved back to the states. Used to adapting to new situations he felt completely at ease when his parents enrolled him at a local New York high school. His accent quickly blended so whilst it was still distinctly English, he didn’t sound like Nigel Thornberry. He also took up Parkour lessons along with keeping up the boxing. His theory about strength affecting strength had been right and Tyler now knew he had to become as strong as possible so he could keep achieving new feats with his gifts.
It was whilst he had been practicing his landings in the suburbs of Brooklyn that Tyler saw a man get robbed. Not really thinking about it he dashed across the roof tops then dived down to crash tackle the robber as they took refuge in an alley. A quick fist to the jaw later and Tyler had one unconscious bad guy and one very thankful victim reunited with his wallet. It was an big moment for Tyler. He realized that with his gifts he was obligated to help people. To keep his talents to himself would just be… well, wrong.
And so Tyler’s face became quite well known. He was something of a poster child for pro mutant organizations. With people so afraid of their powered cousins it was good to have someone doing something right to show them mutants weren’t all bad. However things couldn’t remain that way forever.
When Tyler was almost 19 he bust into a warehouse down on the docks. He’d been given a tip that a drug ring was picking up a shipment down there. But when he went in he didn’t find a bunch of thugs pawing bags of crack. Instead he found a taser to his back. I wont go into the details of what exactly the extremist anti-mutant group did to Ty during his 3 month stay in their basement. Suffice to say it was enough to scar his body permanently and to embed a hatred of humans so firmly in his mind that he not only slaughtered his captors the day they tied his hands a little bit too loosely, but immediately sought out Magneto when he was free and joined the ranks of the Brotherhood.
All this time he had been protecting humans from each other. They didn’t deserve to be protected, to be saved. Instead he should of been protecting mutants from humans. They’ve already taken a mutants freedom with the registration act. It was only a matter of time before they deemed all mutants dangerous and killed them all off. Mutant kind had to strike back or they would be overwhelmed, yet only the Brotherhood could see that. Only they could see that mutants were destined to take over the reign from humans. And Tyler knew unless he helped them, his kind was doomed.
The young mutant cut off all ties with his family. The Brotherhood was his family now. His passion and strength of his powers quickly saw him rise through the ranks. Now well renown as a threat to public safety and high up on the most wanted list, Ty has turned from the poster boy of mutant tolerance, to yet another example of why mutants can’t be trusted.
Note: I wasn’t sure where you wanted Tyler to be placed in the Brotherhood, I’m just going off what was said in the Chatbox. Let me know if I need to edit in specifics of rank position or whatever.
